The film “GATTACA” was set in a futuristic mode, where genetic engineering in humans is being applied. Through this, Vincent (Hawke) was permitted to copy the total genetic identity of Jerome (Law), so that he could apply in a space corporation. His own genetic identity would not allow him to fulfill his dream to reach space because he has some illnesses that hinder him to do so. That is why transferring and copying the genetic makeup from other individual is of great help for him.
The movie has highlighted developments of genetic engineering, particularly in the medical field and forensics. Having this “breakthrough” will benefit a lot of people, especially with those in-born diseases. In addition, solving crime will be in a fast-pace since new techniques are available in tracing the genetic identity of a suspect. However, it will not be an easy task introducing this in recent times because we still consider some societal factors, like human ethics and religious beliefs and practices, and these concerns should not be neglected. It may be a cure to solve genetic diseases and in alleviating human discrimination, but it will take years, perhaps a hundred years, before humanity will accept this “breakthrough.”
